REDUCE LINES

On Forehead

Why We Get Them And How To Treat Them

Forehead lines are a natural part of aging and, as such, a lot of us find ourselves staring at our reflection and wishing we could zap them away with our non-existent laser eyes. However, don’t despair – if you have forehead wrinkles, you’re in the majority and, therefore, are most definitely not alone. Because forehead wrinkles are in such a prominent place on our face, they’re hard to ignore and this culminates in many of us seeking solutions to make them less detectable.
Before we talk about how to reduce the lines on your forehead, its useful to know what causes them. When it comes to wrinkles in general, there are endless variables that contribute to when and where they appear as we age, from genetics to how much sun exposure we get and even screen time (it has been suggested that blue light, like UV, is capable of breaking down collagen’s structure). However, two of the most famous culprits of forehead wrinkles are a decrease in the production of collagen and elastin as well as muscle movement. This is due to the fact that around the age of 25, many of our skin’s functions begin to decline. Collagen and elastin are two vital protein building blocks whose function is to keep our skin pliable and bouncy when we’re young. When the production of these proteins tail off, so does our skin’s resilience and, as a result, lines start to appear. To add to this, the natural expressions your face makes on a daily basis can also contribute to how fast these wrinkles materialize and turn from dynamic into static. Dynamic wrinkles are, as their name suggests, wrinkles that appear with activity (i.e. facial movements). Static wrinkles, on the other hand, are dynamic wrinkles that remain on the face regardless of which expressions we make throughout the day. These are what forehead lines eventually become. Your frontalis muscle (the expanse of muscle that enables you to perform movements like raising your eyebrows or frowning) forms a major part of our facial animations, which is why it’s one of the muscles that’s most likely to contribute to static wrinkles.
Moving onto what you can do about these wrinkles, there are thankfully a number of things that have been recommended to soften their appearance. First and foremost, there’s SPF. Although SPF doesn’t act like botox and forcibly stops your muscles from moving to prevent wrinkles, it does protect against UV which is one of the leading causes of premature dermal aging. Safeguard the expanse of your forehead (and, of course, the rest of your face) from UV, and you’re off to a great start already. Another thing you can do is add the holy trinity of vitamin C, hyaluronic acid and retinol to the mix. These three ingredients are fierce combatants when it comes to slowing dermal aging in its tracks. They help to brighten the complexion and neutralize free radicals, plump the skin by hydrating the dermis and kick-start collagen production respectively. Alternatively, if you find that retinol is too heavy-duty for your skin type, try bakuchiol instead. We talk all about this oil in more detail in our article about Why Bakuchiol Is The New Retinol.
Aside from skincare products, another thing to do is simply to try being aware of when you’re using your forehead to express yourself. Naturally, no one can completely stop using their forehead muscles, but it’s useful to take note of just how much you use them on a daily basis, especially when you’re younger. Preventing overuse of these muscles has been advocated as a way to reduce the likelihood of static wrinkles.
When it comes to reducing the lines on your forehead, and on your face overall, it’s helpful to take your diet into account. A diet that’s plentiful in antioxidants can encourage your skin to heal itself, not to mention effectively fend off free radical damage and, therefore, oxidative stress.
