Originating from the Caribbean, Mexico, Central and Southern America, the fruit of the guava tree are so much more than an alluring tropical treat. With almost twice the amount of vitamin C than that found in oranges – 200mg, to be accurate – guava is great for both the immune system and the skin. If you’ve followed our Instagram and blog posts until now, you’ve no doubt heard us shouting the benefits of vitamin C from the rooftops. Instrumental to maintaining healthy skin by regulating collagen synthesis, vitamin C plays a really significant part in keeping yourself looking young.
High in antioxidants and low in calories, guava makes for a nutritional snack that’s also good for your skin. Being rich in manganese, potassium and lycopene, this exotic fruit is said to be a very beneficial anti-aging gem, especially since such contents combine in helping to fend off free radicals and prevent collagenases (enzymes known for contributing to collagen breakdown). Guava’s manganese content is also very beneficial for the skin and body since it gives the body a helping hand in absorbing the nutrients from the food we consume on a daily basis. Consisting of around 80% water, guava’s also good at maintaining the skin’s hydration levels while its potassium content, close to that in a banana, aids in balancing out blood pressure, which makes this fruit a good all-rounder.
According to various sources, guava leaf extract has stepped up to the mark as a potentially effective treatment for acne when applied topically. This is because it has shown itself to be useful at killing acne-triggering bacteria – something that could be attributed to its anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial qualities. Though more research needs to be conducted on the effects of guava, the evidence thus far has been pretty positive, and we’re excited to see where it leads anti-aging skincare.
